What to Say When Facts Are Still Emerging

You’ve been asked to speak, but the information in front of you is incomplete, evolving, and still being confirmed.

This is often the moment where spokespeople feel the most pressure.
They worry they don’t have enough answers yet.

But in many situations, one of the most effective phrases you can use is:
“Here’s what we know so far.”

That simple line does three important things:
• Shows transparency
• Signals that the situation is still evolving
• Creates space to provide updates as more information is confirmed

Other helpful phrases include:
• “We’re working to verify information as quickly as possible.”
• “We don’t have that detail yet, but we’re actively confirming it.”
• “Right now, our priority is safety and providing accurate information.”

You do not need every answer to communicate with credibility.

In the early stages of a crisis or unfolding situation, people are not expecting certainty. They are looking for honesty, clarity, and reassurance that information will continue to be shared as it becomes available.
